From Unpaid Intern to Silicon Valley CEO: 5 Leadership Lessons with Ahmad Thomas

How do you go from taking an unpaid internship and sleeping on a couch to leading the most powerful business association in Silicon Valley?

For Ahmad Thomas, the answer isn't a secret formula—it's a combination of calculated risks, building a diverse skillset, and maintaining an unwavering commitment to service.

Today, Ahmad is the CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG), where he is at the epicenter of the global AI race, shaping policies that will define the next generation of technology. But his journey to the C-Suite was anything but a straight line.

On this week’s episode of No Boxes, Just Verses, Ahmad and I discussed how his military upbringing, his time on Capitol Hill, and his years on Wall Street created the ultimate "executive athlete."

Here are five powerful lessons from his leadership playlist on how to navigate high-pressure environments and build a career of impact.

    1. The Call to Service (Promised Land - Chuck Berry)

Ahmad is a California native who grew up in a military family near Vandenberg Air Force Base. Early on, being surrounded by veterans taught him a profound lesson about discipline and sacrifice.

That upbringing instilled a core value that has driven every major decision in his life: the need to give back. He realized early that when you have a certain set of gifts, you have a responsibility to figure out how to "better the human condition." Whether in government or tech, true leadership always starts with service.

    2. The Best Business Decision You Will Ever Make (Only You - 112)

When Ahmad was an undergrad at Cornell University, a business law professor gave his class a piece of advice that had nothing to do with contracts or corporate structure.

The professor told them: "The most important decision you'll ever make is the person that you marry."

For Ahmad, that decision was made at Cornell when he met his wife. He credits their strong partnership and shared values as the foundational bedrock that allowed him to take risks and tackle the immense pressures of his career.

    3. Embrace the Hustle and Take Calculated Risks (Funky President - James Brown)

After graduate school, Ahmad was looking at highly-paid management consulting jobs. Instead, he took an unpaid internship on Capitol Hill to work for his political idol, Senator Dianne Feinstein.

It was a massive risk—he wasn't living "high on the hog" and was even sleeping on a couch to make it work. But he hustled, rolled up his sleeves, and eventually became her lead staffer on economic policy during the financial crisis. His advice? Sometimes you have to take a step back and lean into the work to get the opportunities that are truly life-changing.

    4. Collect Your "Passport Stamps" (Jean and Dinah - Mighty Sparrow)

Why would a successful Capitol Hill staffer leave policy to become an investment banker? To build the "complete athlete."

Ahmad realized he needed to bulletproof his quantitative skills. He views different career phases—like operating in a large corporate structure or a Senate office—as "passport stamps." By going to Wall Street, he learned the critical skill of defining a "value proposition," which is exactly what he uses today when pitching CEOs and elected officials. Don't be afraid to pivot if it adds a vital stamp to your professional passport.

    5. Remember the Weight of Your Power (Roller Skates - Steel Pulse)

Today, as the CEO of SVLG, Ahmad is leading initiatives like the Institute for California AI Policy (I-CAP). He is helping to lay the contours of what AI will look like for the world.

His final song, Roller Skates by Steel Pulse, is a reggae track with a heavy message about power. It serves as a daily reminder that if you are fortunate enough to be in a position of influence, you must think about the impact of your decisions on everyone.

    Conclusion

Ahmad’s career proves that there is no single box for success. By combining a heart for public service with the sharp business acumen of Wall Street, he has positioned himself to lead Silicon Valley into its next era. If you are looking to broaden your skillset or need the courage to take a calculated career risk, let Ahmad’s journey be your blueprint.
