Faith in the Trenches: Five Leadership Lessons from Dr. Nicole Barnett

Dr. Nicole Barnett shows us that the strongest leaders are built in the moments where the stakes are highest. She moved from a childhood in Ohio to leading large-scale medical centers and international health initiatives in Zambia. Today, as the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Northern California, she navigates the complex intersection of healthcare, policy, and advocacy.

In our latest conversation, she shares how she stays grounded in her mission even when facing organizational funding cuts or personal family crises. These are the five lessons from her path, told through the music that defines her.

    1. Choose Joy as a Resistance Strategy

Music: Happy Day – Edwin Hawkins

Leadership often involves facing dark days where the numbers don't add up or the politics feel heavy. Dr. Barnett believes that resilience starts with the choice to find joy anyway. She relies on her faith to raise her voice and state that it is still a happy day, regardless of the immediate circumstances.

This isn't about ignoring reality; it is about building a foundation that is not shaken by the news cycle. When you choose joy, you provide a steady North Star for your team to follow. She proves that a leader’s internal weather can change the climate of an entire organization.

    2. Define Equity through Lived Experience

Music: Balm in Gilead – Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman

We often talk about health equity as a set of statistics, but Dr. Barnett views it as a deeply human responsibility. She defines equity as the work of understanding the specific, lived experiences of patients and then actively removing the barriers they face to getting care.

In her work at Planned Parenthood and her time in Zambia, she has seen that a "one size fits all" approach to medicine fails the most vulnerable. True advocacy requires looking at the small, daily obstacles—transportation, childcare, or trust—and clearing the path so every individual has the same opportunity for health.

    3. See the "Setup" in the Setback

    Music: Survivor – Beyoncé

Dr. Barnett has faced significant challenges, including supporting her family through her grandson’s medical crisis while leading a major healthcare organization. She does not view these moments as distractions from her work; she sees them as the very things that prepare her for the fight.

She believes that the Lord has a plan, and the task for a leader is simply to follow it. Every organizational cut or personal struggle acts as a slingshot, providing the grit and perspective needed for the next mission. She proves that you are not just a survivor of your circumstances, but a person built by them.

    4. Prioritize the Internal Foundation

Music: Greatest Love of All – George Benson / Golden – Jill Scott

To lead others well, you must first have a solid sense of self. Dr. Barnett highlights that leadership can be lonely, and the "angels" are sometimes the only ones who see the hard work you do behind the scenes. Without a strong internal foundation, it is easy to burn out or lose your way.

She advocates for a leadership style that values self-love and personal excellence. By recognizing her own value as "golden," she is able to show up fully for her community. She reminds us that you cannot pour from an empty cup, especially when you are fighting for the rights and health of thousands.

    5. Commit to the "Never Too Much" Standard

Music: Never Too Much – Luther Vandross

When the mission is health justice, there is no such thing as being too committed or too excellent. Dr. Barnett leads with a standard that demands the best for her patients and her staff. She views her role as President and CEO not as a title to hold, but as a platform to expand care and equity across Northern California.

She encourages other leaders to see their work as a calling that deserves their full energy. Whether it is mentoring the next generation of nurses or advocating in the halls of government, she proves that a mission-driven career is a life well-lived.

    The Unboxed Takeaway

Dr. Nicole Barnett is a reminder that leadership is a spiritual and professional practice. She shows us that we can navigate the most difficult organizational shifts by staying anchored in our faith and our community.
